What is Nevirapine:
Nevirapine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor class drug that is used in the treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV) Type 1 by blocking the function of reverse transcriptase. Nevirapine is not effective against human immunodeficiency virus type 2 as HIV Type II reverse transcriptase has different structure. This drug is mostly used in combination with the other Antiretroviral Drugs.
Nevirapine is the most effective and safest drug according to the World Health Organisation list of essential medicine. It is also available in generic medication form and was approved by the United States for medical use in 1996.
What is the use of Nevirapine 200mg Tablets
Nevirapine 200mg tablets are used in several treatments. Some treatments are mentioned below:
- Hepatic impairment: This drug is very helpful in patients suffering from moderate to severe hepatic impairment.
- Human Immunodeficiency infection: this medication is used along with other antiretroviral drugs for the treatment of Acquired Immunodeficiency Virus syndrome(AIDS).
- Post Exposure Prophylaxis: Nevirapine is supposed to be used to avoid infection from HIV. Nevirapine generally comes into the different forms: 200 mg tablet tablet and 50 mg in 5 ml oral suspension. Nevirapine is the active ingredient of tablet Nevimune, that is recommended to take orally at the same time of day, either with or without food. Nevirapine medicine is taken once daily for about 14 days and then after 14 days the dose is doubled. Nevirapine is stored at temperature 15 to 30 degree Celsius. This tablet should not be crushed and must be swallowed whole.
On the basis of recent researches, Nevirapine is found safe to be consumed by pregnant women. A single dose of nevirapine to both mother and child reduces the chances of transmission of HIV infection from mother's blood to child.
Side Effects of Nevirapine
Common side effects of nevirapine are headache, nausea, feeling tired, rash and liver problems. If the liver problem or skin Rash turns to be severe the medication should be immediately stopped. Rash commonly occurs when the dose of nevirapine is inappropriate.
Some serious adverse effects of Nevirapine are:
- Fatal skin reactions may occur.
- Hypersensitivity from the nevirapine drug may develop.
- Chronic Hepatitis C main combined with rash to form other severe symptoms.
- Fatal and nonfatal hepatotoxicity may occur.
