Afatinib Medication Guide

Afatinib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, which works by permanently blocking a group of proteins which are involved in the growth as well as spread of cancerous cells.

It helps in order to slow the progression of your cancer and in certain patients it may prolong your survival in people with the certain types of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that have spread to other organs of the body.

Guidelines:

  • You should avoid becoming pregnant while taking afatinib 40 mg. Women who may become pregnant must use effective birth control during the treatment and for at least 2 weeks after stopping the treatment. If you become pregnant, tell your healthcare provider right away.
  • Breastfeeding is not recommended as it may pass into your breast milk and harm your baby. Also females who have a low body weight of less than 50 kg should avoid this drug ultill your doctor tells you. 
  • Do not consume afatinib 20 mg for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give your prescribed medications to other people, even if they have the same condition.
  • The usual recommended dose is one 40 mg tablet, should be taken orally once in a day at same time every day. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water on an empty stomach at least 1 hour prior to or 3 hours after eating. Tablet shouldn't be crushed or broken. 
  • In circumstances of drug overdose, contact your healthcare provider, hospital emergency department, even if there are no signs and symptoms.
  • Store afatinib at 15-30°C. Only one pouch should be opened at a time until all the tablets in the blister card are consumed prior to opening any next pouch.
