Medical uses of Nintedanib

Nintedanib specifically is an oral agent used for the treatment of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and together with other drugs for the treatment of certain types of NSCLC (Non-small Cell Lung Cancer). 

Approval: Nintedanib is a small molecule TKI, targeting vascular endothelial growth factor receptor, fibroblast growth factor receptor and platelet derived growth factor receptor. It was developed by Boehringer Ingelheim and received U.S. FDA approval for the idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in the year of 2014. Several studies since have demonstrated nintedanib's effectiveness in order to slow the progressive, terminal lung disease.

Dosage Form: Nintedanib comes in the form of capsules generically and under the brand name Ofev/Vargatef. The standard nintedanib dose is 150 mg twice in a day administered around 12 hours apart. 

Nintedanib capsules should be taken with food and should be swallowed whole through the liquid. It should not be chewed/crushed due to the bitter taste. 

If a nintedanib 150 mg dose is missed, the next dose needs to be taken at the next scheduled time. Patients are apprised to avoid making up for a missed dose. Also avoid exceeding the usual maximum daily dose of nintedanib 300 mg.

Side Effects: Side effects of nintedanib are usually mild and not life threatening. The commonly reported side effects may include vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

Cost: The nintedanib cost in India may vary depending on the wholesaler or pharmacy and of course the brand you choose. The cost of nintedanib usually costs around Rs. 25,985 for a supply of 10 capsules.
