Side Effects of Carfilzomib

This medicine belongs to a proteasome inhibitor class drug that is used for the treatment of multiple myeloma. It is used in the treatment of a patient who has at least received prior therapy including bortezomib and immunomodulating agent.
 

There are several factors that decide the dosage and use of multiple myeloma drugs which is response rate, improvement in symptoms, clinical benefit, and improvement in Survival.
 

This drug is available in a single vial constituting 60 mg sterile lyophilized powder. Carfilzomib for multiple myeloma is administered intravenously for about 2 to 10 minutes on two consecutive days for at least three weeks.

Side Effects: There are a few common side effects caused by carfilzomib 60 mg injection. These are:

  • Nausea
  • Anemia
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea
  • Pyrexia
  • Fever
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Dyspnea
  • Runny nose
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Weakness
  • Pneumonia

Some serious side effect of this drug is mentioned below:

  • Pulmonary hypertension: if a patient is expected to have pulmonary hypertension then the therapy should be discontinued temporally.
  • Cardiac Adverse Reactions: monitor for any cardiac complications such as heart failure and ischemia.
  • Infusion reactions: if any symptoms of infusion reaction occurs the patient should immediately take medical attention.
  • Pulmonary complications: discontinue the use of this medicine if any symptoms of Pulmonary complication appears.
  • Hippocratic toxicity and hepatic failure: monitor the elevation and depression of liver enzymes and report if any suspected cases occur.
  • Tumor lysis syndrome: to prevent this patient should be perfectly hydrated.
  • Thrombocytopenia: monitor accurately platelet count and discontinue if any complications occur.
  • Ear disorder: this drug may cause deafness in a few cases.
  • Embryo-fetal toxicity: when this drug is consumed by pregnant women it can cause potential damage to a fetus.
  • Eye disorder: cataract or vision failure may occur.
  • Infections: common infections such as viral infection, influenza, lung infection, urinary tract infection are common due to this drug.
  • Connective tissue disorder and musculoskeletal disorder: this medicine can cause weakness in muscles and myalgia.
  • Few nervous system disorders such as hemorrhage, paraesthesia, and hypoesthesia occur.
